More than 3,000 returned soldiers cut it by hand between 1919 and 1932, working with picks and shovels and blasting the harder rock faces; several died on the job.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDrivers paid a toll to cross it until the state cleared the construction debt in October 1936 and removed the toll gate, handing over the finished road as a memorial to the fallen. Tour buses keep to that direction by rule, since the road narrows too far on some stretches for two coaches to pass; drivers going the other way round meet the whole tour fleet coming at them.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOff Portmagee, reachable by boat from the ring road, monks built a stone settlement on the summit of Skellig Michael in the 6th century and lived there in beehive huts through Viking raids until the 12th century. Medieval Italy had four maritime republics: Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa and Venice.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFrom the 9th century Amalfi traded gold coin for silk and spices out of the Orient, and its merchants wrote the Tavole Amalfitane, a maritime code that ports across the Mediterranean followed until 1570, before a tsunami in 1343 wrecked the port and ended the town's reach. Depression-era relief workers began cutting the Homer Tunnel by hand in 1935, swinging picks and hauling rock out by wheelbarrow through solid rock; avalanches killed three of them before the tunnel finally opened to traffic in 1954, nineteen years after the first strike.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOn the far side the road drops fast toward the coast, where Milford Sound collects some of the heaviest rainfall in the country, close to seven metres in an average year and over nine metres in its wettest year on record, 1988.
