Crews built it between 1921 and 1932, the first road the National Park Service designed specifically for cars rather than wagons, and it became a National Historic Landmark in 1997 in recognition of the engineering.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSnow closes the high section every winter, and clearing it each spring can take ten weeks, since crews sometimes gain under 200 m a day against the Big Drift, a snowbank near Logan Pass that can run 24 m deep; the road often does not fully reopen until late June.
