Convicts laid the first stone pier at Point Gellibrand in 1852 and 1853, and the colony rebuilt it as a proper breakwater pier through 1859 to 1861 to handle the wool and grain trade sailing out of Melbourne.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe bluestone Timeball Tower on the point, built the same year that first pier went in, dropped a ball from its mast at exactly one o'clock every day until 1926 so ships offshore could set their chronometers against it.
