Komoot and Garmin Connect both hand you a GPX file of anything you recorded. Each hides the button in a different place, and each has one catch that stops people halfway. This guide covers both apps and both catches.
Komoot
Komoot exports from the app and from the website, and the steps are the same in both.
- Go to your Profile, then Completed activities.
- Open the activity you recorded.
- Tap Download GPX file.
On an iPhone you may be asked where to save it. Pick Files so you can find it again.
The catch: locked regions
Komoot only exports a GPX when the region your activity starts in is unlocked on your account. If it is not, Komoot tells you which region it needs. A free account includes one region, so a hike that starts somewhere else needs that region unlocked first.
If you recorded on Komoot but the region is locked and you also use Strava, a Komoot activity that synced to Strava can be exported from strava.com instead. Our Strava export guide has the steps.
Garmin Connect
Your watch or bike computer syncs every activity to Garmin Connect, and the file comes from there.
- Open the activity at connect.garmin.com.
- Click the gear icon at the top right.
- Choose Export to GPX.
The catch: the phone app cannot export
The Garmin Connect phone app has no GPX export. Use the website instead. It works in a phone browser as well as on a computer, so you do not need to be at a desk. Sign in at connect.garmin.com, open the activity from your activity list, and use the gear icon as above.
Export Original is a different file
Next to Export to GPX you will see Export Original. That gives you the FIT file your device recorded, which holds more sensor data but is not a GPX. Most poster and mapping tools, ours included, want the GPX.
Check the file before you use it
A good export is usually between a few hundred kilobytes and a few megabytes. A file of a few kilobytes almost always means the activity had no GPS track, such as an indoor session or a treadmill run. One activity per file works best. If you joined two recordings into one day out, export each and keep the one you want on the wall.
Turn the file into a poster
Upload the file on our activity poster page under Upload GPX. We draw the exact track you recorded and never smooth or simplify it, so a hike shows every switchback and a ride shows the detour to the cafe. You choose the title and the look, and you see the finished poster before you buy. An A4 print starts at A$59, printed to order in Australia on 200 gsm art paper.
Recorded on something else? Our GPX export guide covers Strava, AllTrails, Ride with GPS, Apple Watch, COROS and Suunto.
Questions people ask
Can I export a route I planned but never did?
Komoot exports planned tours as GPX too, under the same region rule. A planned route has no recorded time, so a poster made from it shows the distance but no moving time.
Will the poster show my heart rate or pace?
No. The poster draws the line you travelled and prints the distance, with the moving time and the date if you want them.
My Garmin syncs to Strava. Which should I export from?
Either works, because it is the same recording. If you use Strava, you can also connect your account on our activity page and skip the file.
