The route

Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal reached the summit of Annapurna I on 3 June 1950, the first peak over 8,000 m ever climbed by anyone; both men survived a night stranded in a crevasse on the way down but lost most of their fingers and toes to frostbite, amputated in the field before they could get out. The conservation area the circuit runs through began as a pilot project at Ghandruk in 1986 and became, once formally established in 1992, the largest protected area in Nepal at 7,629 square kilometres.

Roads built into the valleys from the 2000s onward have shortened the walk considerably from the three weeks it once took; today only the approach to Thorong La and the section past Ghorepani remain free of vehicle traffic. The pass itself still tops out at the same 5,416 m it always has, unchanged by any of the roads built up to its edges.
