The route

The route crosses the Pyrenees at Roncesvalles, then runs west through Pamplona and Logroño, flattens out across the wheat plains of the Meseta toward Burgos and León, and climbs again through Galicia for the final stretch into Santiago. Pilgrims have followed it since the 9th century, after a hermit named Pelayo reported strange lights over a forgotten cemetery in Galicia; Bishop Theodemir of Iria Flavia investigated and declared the remains inside a marble tomb to be the apostle James, and the town took its name, Compostela, from the Latin for that field of stars.

Anyone walking the last 100 km carries a paper credencial, stamped twice a day at churches, town halls, cafes and albergues along the way, then hands it in at the Pilgrims' Office in Santiago for a certificate written out in Latin, free of charge, on the spot. The cathedral bells were already ringing for pilgrims a thousand years before any of that paperwork existed.
