The route

Crews built the road between 1983 and 1989, working through a dozen major storms that tore at the causeways before the last span, the Storseisundet Bridge, finally opened in July 1989. That bridge, a 260 m arc of reinforced concrete, is the road's best known crossing and the one storm photographers wait for, since waves regularly break clean over its deck in bad weather.

In 2005 Norwegian television ran a national poll that named the road the country's construction of the century, ahead of tunnels and bridges built on a far larger scale. The road has since appeared on screen too, most recently as a filming location in the 2021 James Bond film No Time to Die, its narrow bridges and open water immediately recognisable on screen.
