The route

The road runs on past Positano through Praiano and into Amalfi itself, then climbs to Ravello on the hill above before dropping back to sea level through Minori, Maiori, Cetara and Vietri sul Mare toward Salerno. Medieval Italy had four maritime republics: Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa and Venice.

From the 9th century Amalfi traded gold coin for silk and spices out of the Orient, and its merchants wrote the Tavole Amalfitane, a maritime code that ports across the Mediterranean followed until 1570, before a tsunami in 1343 wrecked the port and ended the town's reach. The terraces shading the road today grow the sfusato amalfitano, a lemon two to three times the size of an ordinary one, trellised under reed screens against the sun and picked for limoncello.
