The route

Volunteers under Michel Fabrikant began waymarking the route in 1970, and the trail was fully open by 1975, cut straight down the granite ridge of the island rather than around it. Guidebook writers rate it among the toughest long distance trails in Europe, and the numbers explain why: roughly 180 km on paper, but around 11,000 m of cumulative climbing packed into it, more total ascent than most trails twice its length.

Most walkers take about fifteen days to finish, sleeping in refuges strung along the ridge each night. Monte Cinto, Corsica's highest peak at 2,706 m, rises close enough to the main route that a short detour reaches its summit without adding a full extra day to the schedule most walkers already keep to.
