The route
The road runs from Wangaratta up through Bright and Harrietville before it climbs to Mount Hotham and drops away again toward Omeo and the coast at Bairnsdale. Gold turned up at Harrietville in 1852, and among the diggers who worked its creeks were Chinese miners driven out of the nearby Buckland Valley in an armed riot in 1857, who resettled at Harrietville and stayed.
The road's summit at Mount Hotham sits at 1,862 m and was not fully sealed until the late 1990s, closing the last gap in a route that snow now closes only in the worst weather, rarely for a whole season. Bright still runs on that gold-town layout, its wide main street lined with the plane trees planted for the autumn tourist trade a century after the last nugget came out of the ground.
Made for someone who drove it. Or for your own wall, because you did.
