The route

The road leaves Killarney and follows the Iveragh Peninsula anticlockwise past Killorglin and Glenbeigh, with the Atlantic on one side and the MacGillycuddy's Reeks rising inland on the other. Tour buses keep to that direction by rule, since the road narrows too far on some stretches for two coaches to pass; drivers going the other way round meet the whole tour fleet coming at them.

Off Portmagee, reachable by boat from the ring road, monks built a stone settlement on the summit of Skellig Michael in the 6th century and lived there in beehive huts through Viking raids until the 12th century. Waterville, further round, has its own history: Charlie Chaplin first holidayed there in 1959 and returned most years for a decade, drawn by the fishing on Lough Currane and the anonymity a small Kerry village gave a famous face; a bronze statue of him in his Tramp costume has stood over Ballinskelligs Bay since 1998.

The road climbs once more at Moll's Gap before the run back down into Killarney.

Made for someone who drove it. Or for your own wall, because you did.
