The route

The road runs a single loop around the whole island, finished in 1974 when a new bridge over the Skeiðará glacial plain closed the last gap, opened to mark eleven hundred years since the first Norse settlement. Vatnajökull, the ice cap the road skirts on its eastern stretch, holds around three thousand cubic kilometres of ice, more than any other ice cap in Europe, and covers roughly seven percent of the country.

At Reynisfjara the road passes a black sand beach backed by hexagonal basalt columns up to twenty metres tall, the same rock that shapes cliffs and sea stacks along much of the south coast. Iceland has more people than sheep these days too, a recent reversal of the old joke about the country, its flock down to around 365,000 against a population that has now passed 400,000.

Made for someone who drove it. Or for your own wall, because you did.
