The route
The loop climbs over headland after headland around Cape Breton's north end, running through Cheticamp and along the coast to Pleasant Bay before it turns inland and back down through Baddeck to close the circle. The last stretch, a rough footpath until then, was finished in 1932, closing a loop road builders had spent years cutting one headland at a time.
Alexander Graham Bell built a summer estate at Baddeck in the 1880s, and his descendants still own the 600 acre property on Bras d'Or Lake today. Pilot whales feed in the waters off Pleasant Bay from June to October, alongside minke whales, watched daily from small boats that leave the same harbours the trail passes on its way around the cape.
Made for someone who drove it. Or for your own wall, because you did.
