The route

From Lake Louise the road runs north past Bow Lake and the Peyto Lake viewpoint, climbs over Sunwapta Pass to the Columbia Icefield, then drops past Sunwapta Falls and Athabasca Falls into Jasper. Crews built it through the Depression as a relief project, starting in 1931 and finishing in 1940, working largely by hand and horse team with only one tractor to a camp; the road was not fully paved until 1961.

The milky turquoise the lakes are known for comes from rock flour, fine mineral silt ground out by the glaciers above and carried down into the water by meltwater streams, where it stays suspended and scatters the light. Peyto Lake looks almost artificial from the lookout above it, the colour shifting through the season as the melt rises and falls with the summer heat.

Made for someone who drove it. Or for your own wall, because you did.
