The route

The walk leaves Dove Lake on a boardwalk over button grass, climbs past Marions Lookout and Kitchen Hut, then leaves the path altogether for a scramble over dolerite boulders near the top, using hands as often as feet. Gustav Weindorfer stood on the summit on 4 January 1910 with his wife Kate and two friends and said the mountain must become a national park for everyone; twelve years later, in 1922, the government proclaimed 158,000 acres from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair as a scenic reserve.

Cloud can close over the summit within minutes, turning a clear view into white nothing before hikers reach the cairn at the top; rangers ask walkers to turn back when that happens. On a clear day the whole valley lies open below and Barn Bluff stands alone to the north.

Dove Lake sits like a dark mirror at the base of the climb.
