The route

From Lukla the trail drops to Phakding, then climbs the Dudh Kosi valley to Namche Bazaar, a Sherpa trading town at 3,440 m that has swapped Tibetan salt caravans for trekking gear but still holds its Saturday market. Edmund Hillary's Himalayan Trust built the airstrip at Lukla in 1964 to bring in supplies for the schools and hospitals he was funding for Sherpa communities; its short, sloped runway sits at 2,860 m between mountainsides, with no room for a missed landing.

Past Namche the path climbs on through Tengboche, Pangboche, Dingboche and Lobuche before reaching Base Camp itself at 5,364 m, where the mountain everyone came to see is nowhere in sight: Nuptse's ridge blocks the line of sight to Everest's summit, and most trekkers climb the side peak of Kala Patthar the next morning for the view Base Camp does not give them.

Made for someone who walked it. Or for your own wall, because you did.
