The route

The trail follows a short surviving stretch of a much larger Inca road network, one that UNESCO recognises as running more than 30,000 km across the empire at its height, of which this 36 km is one inscribed section. Hiram Bingham, a Yale lecturer looking for a different lost city, was led to Machu Picchu by a local farmer on 24 July 1911 and published the ruins to the wider world soon after.

Before roads carried any wheeled traffic at all, Inca relay runners called chasqui carried messages along routes like this one, stationed roughly every 2.5 km and covering up to 240 km in a single day passing word from runner to runner. Peru now caps the trail at 500 people a day, a quota that counts guides and porters alongside trekkers, so the crowds Bingham never saw now book their place months in advance.

Made for someone who walked it. Or for your own wall, because you did.
