The route

The trail runs in twelve sections from the Alice Springs telegraph station out past Simpsons Gap and Standley Chasm to Mount Sonder, climbing and dropping through gorge after gorge of red quartzite. Parks staff opened the first section in 1990 and finished linking the whole 230 km route in April 2002, waymarking a path the Arrernte people had already read for tens of thousands of years.

The trail takes its name from the Finke River it crosses, called Larapinta by the Arrernte and reckoned by geologists to be one of the oldest riverbeds still carrying water anywhere on Earth. Mount Sonder, the trail's final climb and the Northern Territory's fourth-highest peak at 1,380 m, turns pink at dawn for walkers who time the last section to reach its summit before sunrise.
