The route

From Te Anau the road climbs the Eglinton and Hollyford valleys before it reaches the tunnel mouth at the base of the Darran Mountains. Depression-era relief workers began cutting the Homer Tunnel by hand in 1935, swinging picks and hauling rock out by wheelbarrow through solid rock; avalanches killed three of them before the tunnel finally opened to traffic in 1954, nineteen years after the first strike.

On the far side the road drops fast toward the coast, where Milford Sound collects some of the heaviest rainfall in the country, close to seven metres in an average year and over nine metres in its wettest year on record, 1988. Mitre Peak rises 1,692 m straight out of the water at the Sound's edge, the first thing most drivers see once the tunnel lets them out into daylight and rain.

Made for someone who drove it. Or for your own wall, because you did.
