The route
Boats cross Lake Te Anau to the trailhead, and from there the track climbs through beech forest to Mackinnon Pass before it drops past Sutherland Falls to finish at Milford Sound. Quintin McKinnon and Ernest Mitchell first found a way over the pass that carries his name in October 1888, guiding early parties through before he disappeared on Lake Te Anau four years later, presumed drowned.
Donald Sutherland found the falls in 1880 and first reckoned them at over a thousand metres; they are in fact 580 m, dropping in three leaps, still the tallest waterfall in New Zealand. A London magazine ran an essay calling the walk the finest in the world in 1908, and the track has kept the label ever since, though only forty people a day are allowed to start it in season, so most who want to check the claim have to book months ahead.
Made for someone who walked it. Or for your own wall, because you did.
