The route
The trail runs the length of the American West along the mountain crest, from the desert border with Mexico up through the Sierra Nevada and the Cascades to the Canadian line. A schoolteacher named Catherine Montgomery first proposed a border to border crest trail in 1926, and through the late 1930s youth groups scouted roughly two thousand miles of it in a relay hike, passing a logbook team to team all the way north.
The route was not declared complete as one continuous trail until 1993, though most of its tread had existed in pieces for decades before that. For much of its length through the Sierra it runs alongside the John Muir Trail, sharing the same path for something like 160 of that trail's 210 miles and splitting away only a few times, and most people who walk the whole distance in one go take about five months to do it.
Made for someone who walked it. Or for your own wall, because you did.
