The route
The road loops through the San Juan Mountains, climbing three passes above 3,000 m and running through Ouray and Silverton, two towns built on the same silver rushes that first cut roads into these mountains. Ouray, ringed by peaks on three sides in a natural rock amphitheater, was named for the Ute chief and incorporated in 1876; the setting earned it the nickname Switzerland of America not long after.
Silverton, founded in 1874, grew to two thousand people and four hundred buildings within a decade as its mines shipped over a million dollars of silver a year by 1885. The narrow gauge railroad built in 1881 and 1882 to carry that ore down to the smelters in Durango still runs the same line today, a working train older than the road that now runs beside it.
Made for someone who drove it. Or for your own wall, because you did.
