The route

The track circles Ngauruhoe, Tongariro and Ruapehu, climbing past the Red Crater and down to the Emerald Lakes before it loops back through tussock and old lava flow to the start. Ngāti Tūwharetoa chief Horonuku Te Heuheu Tūkino IV gifted the three peaks to the Crown in 1887, and the land became Tongariro National Park in 1894, New Zealand's first and among the earliest anywhere to begin as a gift from its indigenous owners rather than a claim over their land.

The Emerald Lakes get their colour from sulphur and dissolved minerals leaching out of the geothermal ground near Red Crater, the water acidic enough to sting a scraped knee. Ngauruhoe played Mount Doom in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films, though its summit remains sacred to local Māori, who ask walkers not to climb it.
