How to export a GPX file from Runkeeper

Runkeeper does not export one activity at a time. Its export lives on the Runkeeper website and hands you every activity in a date range, as a zip with one GPX file per activity. That sounds like more than you need for one run, but there is a simple way to make it exactly one.

Export from the Runkeeper website

  1. Sign in at runkeeper.com.
  2. Open the Settings gear, then Account Settings.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and open Export Data.
  4. Set the start date and the end date to the day of your run, then start the export.
  5. When it is ready, download the zip from the same page.

A short range is ready quickly. A long one can take a while: the page refreshes on its own every half a minute or so until the file appears. Once it is ready, the download stays there for 7 days.

What is in the zip

Unzip it and you will find one GPX file for each activity in your date range, along with some CSV files that summarise your history. You only need the GPX. If you set the range to a single day with one run on it, there is only one GPX file to choose.

The catch: some activities have no GPX

Runkeeper cannot export activities you entered by hand, because they have no GPS track. Activities recorded on an Apple Watch on its own, without your phone, do not export either.

Check the file before you use it

A good GPX of a run is usually between a few hundred kilobytes and a few megabytes. A file of a few kilobytes usually means the activity had no GPS track, such as a treadmill run.

Turn the file into a poster

Upload the file on our activity poster page under Upload GPX. We draw the exact track you ran and never smooth or simplify it, so every corner of the course stays where you took it. The distance, moving time, elevation and date can print beside the route. You choose the title and the look, and you see the finished poster before you buy. Every print is made to order on 200 gsm art paper.

Use something else as well? We have guides for Strava, Garmin Connect and Komoot, AllTrails, COROS and Suunto, and our GPX export guide has every app in one place.

Questions people ask

Can I export from the Runkeeper phone app?

The export is on the Runkeeper website, under Account Settings.

My first marathon was years ago. Can I still get it?

Yes. Set the date range around race day and the export includes it, however old it is.
