The route

Alfred Wainwright published the route by hand in March 1973, sketching his own maps for a walk that crosses three national parks, starting among the Lake District fells and finishing on the heather of the North York Moors, with the Yorkshire Dales in between. Walkers still follow his opening ritual, dipping a boot in the Irish Sea at St Bees, carrying a pebble the whole way across the country, then dropping it and dipping the other boot in the North Sea at Robin Hood's Bay.

The path stayed an unofficial route, kept open by enthusiasts and local goodwill, until the government finally designated it a National Trail in March 2026, more than fifty years after Wainwright first drew it. His hand-drawn maps still guide walkers along the same line that took him years of fieldwork to work out on foot.

Made for someone who walked it. Or for your own wall, because you did.
