The route

From Chamonix the path climbs over the Col de la Seigne into Italy, drops to Courmayeur under the massif's south face, then climbs again over the Grand Col Ferret into Switzerland before turning back through Champex and over the Col de Balme into France to finish. A Genevan scientist named Horace Bénédict de Saussure walked the whole loop in 1767 searching for a way up Mont Blanc itself; a century later wealthy Victorian tourists did the same circuit for pleasure, most of them on muleback.

Walkers now cover roughly 10,600 m of climbing over the full loop, split across nine to fourteen days between mountain refuges that change menu with the border: polenta and cheese on the Italian side of the Grand Col Ferret, tartiflette back on the French. The massif itself never leaves view, and its glaciers can be seen from three different countries in the same afternoon.
