The route

The name means hot spring route, laug for spring and vegur for way, and the trail earns it at both ends: Landmannalaugar's rhyolite hills run pink, green, yellow and purple with dissolved minerals, and a stream there mixes geothermal heat with glacial melt to a bathing temperature most walkers stop for before the climb properly begins. From there the path crosses black desert and rhyolite ridge to Álftavatn, then drops through moss and birch into the green valley of Þórsmörk.

Since 1997 the same route has doubled as the course for the Laugavegur Ultra Marathon each July, a race that covers in a single day what most hikers take four days to walk. The hot ground and the cold glaciers sit close enough together the whole way that walkers pass between them more than once.
